Hypermobile Voice & Swallow

Specialized Speech-Language Pathology for Hypermobility-Related Voice and Swallowing Disorders

Individuals with hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD) and hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) often experience overlooked but significant challenges with voice production and swallowing. These difficulties stem from the same connective tissue differences that affect joints throughout the body—including the delicate structures of the larynx, pharynx, and esophagus.

How Hypermobility Affects Voice and Swallowing

The joint hypermobility and tissue laxity characteristic of hEDS and HSD can impact the cricoarytenoid and cricothyroid joints of the larynx, leading to vocal instability, breathiness, vocal fatigue, and difficulty projecting the voice. Additionally, weakness in the muscles supporting the throat and esophagus can contribute to dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), including sensations of food getting stuck, prolonged mealtimes, and aspiration risk.

Our Specialized Approach

Our providers understand the complex interplay between hypermobility and communication/swallowing function. Therapy is individualized and may include:

  • Voice therapy tailored to laryngeal instability and muscle weakness

  • Resonant voice techniques to reduce vocal strain and improve efficiency

  • Swallowing rehabilitation and strategies

  • Postural strategies accounting for cervical instability and overall postural considerations

  • Breathing and support techniques adapted for autonomic dysfunction often present in this population

  • Collaboration with your medical team, including physical therapists, gastroenterologists, and rheumatologists

We recognize that hypermobility disorders are systemic conditions requiring comprehensive, coordinated care. Our goal is to help you communicate clearly, eat safely, and reduce the daily burden of voice and swallowing symptoms.
