Clare Henderson, MA, CCC-SLP
(they/she)

Clare began their career as a speech-language pathologist in their 30s after initially earning a degree in English. They began their career working in acute care hospitals and went on to earn the designation of Certified Brain Injury Specialist. While she no longer practices in acute care or cognitive rehabilitation, Clare uses that experience as a foundation to support their current work, including a strong value of interdisciplinary learning and collaboration.

Clare’s practice is deepened through knowledge of diverse teaching and medical practices, however, trans liberation and empowerment is the cornerstone of her work. In their approach to voice-work, Clare values autonomy and choice balanced with guidance, feedback, and encouragement. She strongly believes that there are countless ways to do voice work, and that each individual’s voice journey and training is unique.

“My job is all about making myself obsolete - voice modification involves a set of skills that once you know how to use them flexibly, you can (at least in theory) continue modifying your voice for the rest of your life!”

“Do you hate breathing practices and already know you won’t do them? I would say it’s awesome that you know that about yourself and your body. Let’s do something different.”

Clare loves working with singers of all types, regardless of style, age, gender, and experience level! Their philosophy is that singing is a function of the human body and one that is worthy of care whether you’re an “in the shower” singer, or performing. Because their primary focus is on vocal function (how to help the voice perform with optimal balance, endurance, range, physical comfort), they leave more artistry-focused teaching to singing teachers and singing-specialized voice therapists (which they have referrals for!). Clare also has specialized experience in voice, upper airway, and swallowing disorders for those with complex medical histories and chronic illness, including those with hypermobility-related disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (welcome, Zebras!).
