Gender-Affirming Voice Therapy

What is gender-affirming voice therapy?

Gender-affirming voice therapy is a service that allows individuals to find, create, and use a voice more aligned with their gender identity.

How does it work?

Loud & Clear Speech Therapy, PLLC uses an individualized approach with each client to ensure they end up with an outside voice that matches how they feel on the inside. Clients are taught the anatomy and physiology of voice production, explore gender assumptions related to voice and communication, practice strategies and techniques one-on-one with an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist, and are given customized home programming to help them achieve their goals faster.

Who is a good candidate for gender-affirming voice therapy?

The best candidates for gender-affirming voice therapy are individuals who are committed to practicing using their new voice every (or almost every) day. Individuals should have access to reliable internet and video/audio interface (such as a webcam and microphone). Most individuals who pursue gender-affirming voice therapy are at least 13 years old.

Do I have to be transgender?

Nope! Although most clients pursuing gender-affirming voice therapy identify as transgender, many do not. You may identify as cisgender, non-binary, agender, or something else entirely. Anyone who isn't happy with the way their voice sounds can benefit from gender-affirming voice therapy.

How long does it take?

This depends largely on how frequently sessions are scheduled and how consistently homework is practiced. Most clients can hear a difference in their voice during the first session. Clients who schedule sessions on a weekly or bi-weekly basis and commit to practicing every day can usually expect to have a firm grasp on the skills and techniques needed to change their voice in 4-6 sessions and begin using their voice independently "in the wild" after around 10-12 sessions, however, this number is different for everybody due to the individualized nature of voice therapy.

Will my insurance pay for it?

Please see the Insurance & Fees page for information on how to find out if your insurance carrier is contracted with Loud & Clear Speech Therapy and how to learn more about coverage and expected costs.

Does virtual voice therapy really work as well as in-person?

Yes, absolutely! Based on experience, clients who receive virtual voice therapy traditionally have the same outcomes as clients who receive services in-person. Clients are still able to learn and master the same techniques virtually that would be taught in-person, with the added bonus of the flexibility that comes with choosing when and where you are ready to work on your voice.
